Broken blood vessels are visible enlarged blood vessels that appear on the face and other parts of the body. They are fine, red veins that are commonly located on the nose, chin, or cheeks. These vessels usually appear as a result of aging, pregnancy, childbirth, birth control pills, estrogen replacement therapy, sun damage, and Rosacea.
Blood vessel laser treatment is a non-invasive light therapy, specifically designed to eliminate unwanted blood vessels from any area of the body. The laser will generate intense, concentrated beams of light which is directed using a small hand piece and guided over the treatment site. The energy created passes through the skin and damages the lining of the targeted blood vessels. The laser is only turned on for a fraction of a second at a time which allows the blood vessels to absorb the energy, without any other area receiving excess heat. The destroyed blood vessels are then reabsorbed by the body, and the flow of blood is redirected into deeper vessels, where it belongs.
All parts of the body can be treated using our lasers, however the most common areas which are treated are the thighs, lower legs, ankles, nose, face and upper chest.
Before our Doctor proceeds with laser treatment he/she will run small tests to see how you react to the treatment using test areas. Test areas are small areas of skin that are treated at various laser energy levels, with various spot sizes and at various laser pulse durations prior to treatment of large surface areas. This ensures the best possible results and maximum safety.
As the laser only emits concentrated light the patient will feel hardly anything during treatment. They may feel a small tingling sensation but there is no bleeding as no open wounds will be created. Many patients find that shaving the area they are having treated will result in less comfort, however other patients feel this causes the skin to be more sensitive and it distresses them more so. It is important to eat and drink well before this treatment to ensure that you are comfortable. This will reduce the perception of been discomfort able during the procedure.
This form of procedure is incredibly safe and has no major side effects. Some minor side effects include swelling or redness which will typically disappear within 24 hours. Occasionally there can be an alteration of the skins pigment in the area treated, however this will reveres back to normal within a couple of months with the application of creams. Bruising may also occur, however like any other bruises; they will heal in approximately 2 weeks.
How many treatments it will take to achieve ideal results varies from parent to patient as it can depend on a number of factors. Such factors include the desired degree of blood vessel reduction, hormonal status, the area being treated and medications the patient has been described. However, typically facial areas require 1 to 2 treatments and 3 to 4 treatments for the leg areas. Treatments can be carried out every 6 weeks for the facial area and every 3 months on leg areas. Additional touch up treatments will be required to prolong results.
After treatment the skin will generally be redder for a few hours and will feel dryer than usual for the days following the procedure. This problem is easily solved by applying moisturizer to the troubled areas. The blood vessels which have been treated will probably be more noticeable for the next couple of weeks as they will be darker. This is because after laser treatment the blood vessels will swell up before the body removes them naturally. In almost all cases it is possible for the patient to continue their normal day to day activity directly after the treatment. However, to reduce the chance of an uneven tanning on the skin, the patient should avoid exposure to the sun and tanning for 2 weeks after the procedure.
