As we age our skin loses collagen and elasticity. This results in our skin becoming thinner and more wrinkled and lines. Soft Tissue fillers are hyaluronic based acid which is already a component of our skin and tissues. We produce less of this as we grow older.
Soft Tissuefillers can be injected in most parts of the face and their application is only limited by the skill, experience and artistic eye of the injector. Common areas that can be injected include nasolabial folds (lines from corner of nose to corner of mouth), marionette lines (sad lines), smokers lines and lips to enhance volume and definition. They can also be used to disguise humps and bumps of the nose (non surgical nose job), create an eyebrow lift, replace lost volume to the mid face and cheeks, define cheek bones and enhance the chin.
In our clinic, Restylane, Juvederm®, Emervel , Belotero and Radiesse are the most used brands. Each filler brand typically has a number of products within their range with softer fillers which are injected more superficially into fine lines through to thicker fillers which are injected deeper (for example to enhance cheek volume). Our experienced doctors will discuss your options with you giving you reasons for their recommendations.
You can expect some degree of redness of the area injected. You may also experience slight swelling. These injection related side effects typically resolve within 24 to 48 hours. Bruising may occur and usually resolves within 5 to 7 days.
Hyaluronic acid based Soft Tissue fillers last anywhere between 4 and 12 months with 6 to 9 months being a general average. This is highly variable and depends on many factors including:
- the type of filler injected
- the area injected
- lifestyle factors (eg smoking, sunbed use)
- patient age and skin quality
